pouvoir conjugation

Pouvoir means "can" or "to be able to". The present is je peux, tu peux, il peut, nous pouvons, vous pouvez, ils peuvent. The passé composé is j'ai pu, the imparfait je pouvais, the future je pourrai, the conditional je pourrais and the subjunctive que je puisse. It has no imperative.

In the present, nous pouvons and vous pouvez keep the pouv- of the infinitive. The other four switch to eu: peux, peux, peut, peuvent. The future swaps the stem for pourr-, with two r's, then takes the normal endings.
  • Red pencil is what breaks the pattern, graphite is the normal endings.
  • Peux, peux and peut all sound the same: puh.

pouvoir — can, to be able to. Je peux.

Present (présent)

The everyday present: what you do, what's true, what's going on.

PronounpouvoirSay
jepeuxzhuh PUH
tupeuxtew PUH
il / elle / onpeuteel PUH
nouspouvonsnoo poo-VOHN
vouspouvezvoo poo-VAY
ils / ellespeuventeel PUHV

Peux, peux and peut all sound like puh. Ils peuvent is the only one where you hear something extra: the v. Like English "can", it goes straight in front of another verb: je peux venir (I can come).

To ask, est-ce que je peux…? or just je peux…? is everyday. Flipped round, it's puis-je…?, never peux-je. Puis-je is formal: you'll see it in writing and hear it in shops more than between friends.

Past (passé composé)

The everyday past, for things that happened: "I was", "I had". It's avoir or être plus the past participle.

PronounpouvoirSay
je (j')ai puzhay PEW
tuas putew ah PEW
il / elle / ona pueel ah PEW
nousavons punoo za-vohn PEW
vousavez puvoo za-vay PEW
ils / ellesont pueel zohn PEW

Avoir plus pu. The passé composé is for when you managed it, or didn't: je n'ai pas pu venir (I couldn't come). For "could" as in "was able to, in general", use the imparfait.

Imperfect (imparfait)

The past for how things were or used to be: "I was tired", "we used to have a dog".

tupouvaistew poo-VEH
il / elle / onpouvaiteel poo-VEH

Future, conditional and subjunctive

"Will" and "would", plus the subjunctive: the form French uses after il faut que, je veux que and other wishes and doubts.

tupourraspourraispuisses
il / elle / onpourrapourraitpuisse
nouspourronspourrionspuissions
vouspourrezpourriezpuissiez
ils / ellespourrontpourraientpuissent

The conditional is the polite one. Pourriez-vous m'aider? is "could you help me?", and tu pourrais…? is the same between friends. The subjunctive has its own stem, puiss-: pour que tu puisses venir, so that you can come.

Participles

The "-ing" form (étant, being) and the past participle that makes the passé composé (été, been).

FormpouvoirIn a sentence
present participlepouvantNe pouvant pas venir, il a appelé (not being able to come, he called)
past participlepuJ'ai fait ce que j'ai pu (I did what I could)

What pouvoir does

Phrases you'll hear all the time
FrenchMeans
je peux ?can I?
je n'en peux plusI can't take it anymore, I'm done
il se peut que…it may be that…
on ne peut pasyou can't, we can't
ça se peutcould be

No imperative. You can't tell someone "can!" in French either. And for knowing how to do something, French uses savoir: je sais nager (I can swim, I know how). Je peux nager is more like "I'm able to, or allowed to, right now".
