> *Pouvoir* means "can" or "to be able to". The present is *je peux, tu peux, il peut, nous pouvons, vous pouvez, ils peuvent*. The passé composé is *j'ai pu*, the imparfait *je pouvais*, the future *je pourrai*, the conditional *je pourrais* and the subjunctive *que je puisse*. It has no imperative.

**Diagram.** In the present, nous pouvons and vous pouvez keep the pouv- of the infinitive. The other four switch to eu: peux, peux, peut, peuvent. The future swaps the stem for pourr-, with two r's, then takes the normal endings.
> The conjugation of pouvoir as two grids, singular on the left and plural on the right. Present: je peux, tu peux, il peut, nous pouvons, vous pouvez, ils peuvent, with peux, peux, peut and the peuv- of peuvent marked as irregular. Future: je pourrai, tu pourras, il pourra, nous pourrons, vous pourrez, ils pourront, with the stem pourr- marked.
- pouvoir, present: **peux**, **peux**, **peut**, pouvons, pouvez, **peuv**ent.
- pouvoir, future: **pourr**ai, **pourr**as, **pourr**a, **pourr**ons, **pourr**ez, **pourr**ont.
- Bold marks the letters that break the pattern.
- **Red pencil** is what breaks the pattern, **graphite** is the normal endings.
- *Peux*, *peux* and *peut* all sound the same: *puh*.

**pouvoir** — can, to be able to. *Je peux*.

## Present (présent)

*The everyday present: what you do, what's true, what's going on.*

| Pronoun | pouvoir | Say |
| --- | --- | --- |
| je | peux | zhuh PUH |
| tu | peux | tew PUH |
| il / elle / on | peut | eel PUH |
| nous | pouvons | noo poo-VOHN |
| vous | pouvez | voo poo-VAY |
| ils / elles | peuvent | eel PUHV |

*Peux*, *peux* and *peut* all sound like *puh*. *Ils peuvent* is the only one where you hear something extra: the *v*. Like English "can", it goes straight in front of another verb: *je peux venir* (I can come).

To ask, *est-ce que je peux…?* or just *je peux…?* is everyday. Flipped round, it's *puis-je…?*, never *peux-je*. *Puis-je* is formal: you'll see it in writing and hear it in shops more than between friends.

## Past (passé composé)

*The everyday past, for things that happened: "I was", "I had". It's avoir or être plus the past participle.*

| Pronoun | pouvoir | Say |
| --- | --- | --- |
| je (j') | ai pu | zhay PEW |
| tu | as pu | tew ah PEW |
| il / elle / on | a pu | eel ah PEW |
| nous | avons pu | noo za-vohn PEW |
| vous | avez pu | voo za-vay PEW |
| ils / elles | ont pu | eel zohn PEW |

*Avoir* plus *pu*. The passé composé is for when you managed it, or didn't: *je n'ai pas pu venir* (I couldn't come). For "could" as in "was able to, in general", use the imparfait.

## Imperfect (imparfait)

*The past for how things were or used to be: "I was tired", "we used to have a dog".*

| Pronoun | pouvoir | Say |
| --- | --- | --- |
| je | pouvais | zhuh poo-VEH |
| tu | pouvais | tew poo-VEH |
| il / elle / on | pouvait | eel poo-VEH |
| nous | pouvions | noo poo-VYOHN |
| vous | pouviez | voo poo-VYAY |
| ils / elles | pouvaient | eel poo-VEH |

## Future, conditional and subjunctive

*"Will" and "would", plus the subjunctive: the form French uses after il faut que, je veux que and other wishes and doubts.*

| Pronoun | Futur | Conditionnel | Subjonctif |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| je | pourrai | pourrais | puisse |
| tu | pourras | pourrais | puisses |
| il / elle / on | pourra | pourrait | puisse |
| nous | pourrons | pourrions | puissions |
| vous | pourrez | pourriez | puissiez |
| ils / elles | pourront | pourraient | puissent |

The conditional is the polite one. *Pourriez-vous m'aider?* is "could you help me?", and *tu pourrais…?* is the same between friends. The subjunctive has its own stem, *puiss-*: *pour que tu puisses venir*, so that you can come.

## Participles

*The "-ing" form (étant, being) and the past participle that makes the passé composé (été, been).*

| Form | pouvoir | In a sentence |
| --- | --- | --- |
| present participle | pouvant | *Ne pouvant pas venir, il a appelé* (not being able to come, he called) |
| past participle | pu | *J'ai fait ce que j'ai pu* (I did what I could) |

## What pouvoir does

*Phrases you'll hear all the time*

| French | Means |
| --- | --- |
| je peux ? | can I? |
| je n'en peux plus | I can't take it anymore, I'm done |
| il se peut que… | it may be that… |
| on ne peut pas | you can't, we can't |
| ça se peut | could be |

**No imperative.** You can't tell someone "can!" in French either. And for knowing how to do something, French uses *savoir*: *je sais nager* (I can swim, I know how). *Je peux nager* is more like "I'm able to, or allowed to, right now".

- **Looking a word up once doesn't mean you'll remember it.** The verb you look up today is gone by tomorrow. The one that keeps showing up in stuff you'd read anyway, right when you're about to forget it, is the one that sticks.
- **No streaks, no guilt.** Kin tracks one number: how many words you've got in reach today. It drops when you take a break and comes back when you do.

## Questions

### Is it je peux or je puis?

*Je peux*. *Je puis* exists but is old-fashioned. The one place *puis* is normal is the question *puis-je…?* (may I…?): *peux-je* isn't used.

### What is the passé composé of pouvoir?

*J'ai pu, tu as pu, il a pu, nous avons pu, vous avez pu, ils ont pu*. It takes *avoir*, and the participle is just *pu*.

### What is the future of pouvoir?

*Je pourrai, tu pourras, il pourra, nous pourrons, vous pourrez, ils pourront*. The stem is *pourr-*, with two r's.

### What is the conditional of pouvoir?

*Je pourrais, tu pourrais, il pourrait, nous pourrions, vous pourriez, ils pourraient*. It's "could" and "would be able to", and it's how you ask politely: *pourriez-vous…?*

### What is the subjunctive of pouvoir?

*Que je puisse, que tu puisses, qu'il puisse, que nous puissions, que vous puissiez, qu'ils puissent*.

### How do you say I can't in French?

*Je ne peux pas*, often just *je peux pas* in speech. "I couldn't" is *je n'ai pas pu*.
